Upper Deck Authenticated

What can you say about Upper Deck Authenticated that hasn't been said time and time again?

They're the BEST source for any genuine authentic autographed sports collectibles. Bar none. You can write to me about whomever and make whatever statements about whomever, but UDA established the benchmark. Unlike so many other "reputable" companies and individuals who have run afoul with questionable sources, mistakes, and outright fraud.

UDA has even gone so far as to invent brand new technology (The PenCam) in order to preserve their position as the leading provider of certified materials.

Sadly, Frank has had a sporadic relationship with UDA, with most material coming from 1993. Once he signed as the spokesperson for Leaf/Donruss later that year, autographed UDA collectibles stopped. His renewed relationship with the new Donruss (now owned by Playoff) has been the primary source of authentic autographs. (UPDATE 11/9/05: Playoff has announced that they will not granted a renewed MLBPA license, meaning that Upper Deck will likely be the primary source of certified Frank autographs from 2006-going forward)

The following are the UDA-specific Frank collectibles available. (this list might not be complete) Not included on this list are cards certified by UDA but available through card packs such as SP, SPA, and UD's Buy Back Autograph Program. An example of which can be seen here. While all the 2-Card sets were issued in 1993, two utilize products from the previous year (1992): The Homerun Heroes and CWS Checklist Card. Also note that these two "1992" issues were also the most limited: 300 autographed sets each.

• 1993 UD CWS Checklist 2-Card Set - #'d to 300, UDA Product Code 10384 (1992 card)
• 1993 UD Homerun Heroes 2-Card Set - #'d to 300, UDA Product Code 10385 (1992 card)
1993 UD Triple Crown Contenders Autograph 2-Card Set - #'d to 1000, UDA Product Code 10627
• 1993 UD SP #260, 8-1/2 x 11 Blow-Up (not autographed) - #'d to 10,000, UDA Product Code 10679
• 1993 UD On Deck Autograph 2-Card Set - #'d to 1000, UDA Product Code 12007
• 1993 UD Future Heroes Autograph 2-Card Set - #'d to 1500, UDA Product Code 12158
• 1993 American League Baseball , Autographed - UDA Product Code 10383. AL President Gene Budig imprint.
• 1993 Wilson Autographed Bat - UDA Product Code 10393

• 1993 16 x 20 Print, Autographed, comes Unframed & With Frame - UDA Product Code (xxxxx) - unfortunately, my framed print did not come in its original box, so if you know the code, let me know.

• 2001 Autographed Home Jersey (not game-used) * - Specially signed for the Upper Deck Big League Challenge, Feb. 9-11, 2001 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also available was a framed photo print with a cut piece of a game-used baseball. It wasn't issued thru their UDA line, but I mention it because it came from the same event. Additionally, there was a baseball card issued for this event. It could be found in select packages of Twizzlers brand licorice treats. Awesome cards btw.
2004 (1993) UD Triple Crown Contenders Autographed Card - Extremely unusual "re-hologram" card from UDA_Auctions (their eBay ID). Not sure how this came about since the sales contact I spoke with was new to the company and she didn't know too much about UDA's history. Also note that this is definitely from the initial 1993 issue - numbered out of a 1000. Again, how this came about I can't say, but it matches the two versions I already have in my collection.

My gut instinct says that not all of the thousand were issued in '93. I suspect some were set aside for UD's general purpose use. i.e. Gifts to UD guests and friends, archives (in-house library), or possibly held back in case of returns or rejections by hobbyists (this is possible since at least some versions were so tightly set inside their acrylic holders that it literally crushed the cards, damaging them if opened). Collector's Note: The UDA hologram on this "re-hologram" is found on the card front.

Collector's Note: Often confusing matters Upper Deck created a card line called "SP Authentic" or "SPA" - providing autographed cards certified under their UDA banner. This page lists only Frank Thomas UDA material specifically created for the UDA line.
