1991 Sports Card Trader Magazine
Recently, I was asked why I sometimes refer to our guy as "Big Frank" and not his well-known moniker of "The Big Hurt" or "Big Hurt".

The answer comes from this magazine, which I actually bought back in 1991! How's that for provenance. <lol>

In it, and just after Frank's first full season in the Bigs, the author of the article asked him if he had any nicknames growing up or that he had acquired since arriving in the major leagues.

Frank's reply was:

"Big Frank. That's it."

Remember, Frank himself said that was his nickname. Obviously, this was before ChiSox Announcer Ken Harrelson gave him the title that would be with him the rest of his career.

So that's how I knew him when I first started out collecting - and it's stuck with me all these years.
