It
was unfortunate that Pinnacle Brands decided to go into a "new direction"
(business-speak for firing someone) when they took over the Donruss company.
As the Diamond Kings creator, artist Dick Perez helped bring to life the 'art-into-a-card'
phenomenon. And he was on the verge of breaking into new artistic ground when
Pinnacle Brands pulled the rug out from under him. Bad for him - and bad for
all of us - as the Diamond Kings art really nosedived after his departure. I'm
pleased to say that under Playoff the newly refreshed Donruss brand has selected
a much better grade of artists. Hopefully they'll bring back Dick Perez one
day.
If you own the original
art to either of the images seen above - drop me a line, we
gotta talk.
*Update 11.8.07: Okay, I'll be the first to admit that things have changed
since the mid-1990's, particular in regards to the latest work by Dick Perez.
I'm not clear whether his work on Turkey Red was intentionally 'bad' - thus
reflecting the style from Tobacco-era artists, but clearly his recent work does
not reflect his amazing productions from a decade ago.
