Flip That Card
or "How-To-Be-Inspired-By-Greedy-Realtors"
UPDATED
4.4.07
Taking
their cue from opportunist humps in the realty/home industry - card collectors
are now faced with the same type of behavior.
These avarice-driven individuals purchase a rare card at absolute top dollar,
pushing out genuine collectors who would truly cherish the collectible, only
to resell that same collectible for a huge profit. I want to make it clear that
while not illegal and certainly not immoral to chase a buck - it has the detrimental
side-effect of crushing the hopes of regular Joes like you & me, and benefiting
only a few very wealthy collectors - most of whom couldn't/don't give a crap
about being a fan of that particular player. The
card becomes nothing more than a prop for their flaying egos
as they claim it as 'theirs'. Mojo indeed.
Here's a classic example. And keep in mind this fact: I only started tracking
this card after it had already been sold and resold two times previously. I
picked this up midway through the "flip" game.
Here
it was on November 2, 2006. As you can see the winning bidder beat out a lot
of hardcore Thomas Collectors, myself included.
And here the winning bidder in November listed the card over the course of the
next few months with new BIN price tags of $999, $799, and finally $550. Please
note that the buyer/seller has two accounts - both listed in Maryland - both
in the same city. It's the same guy. (Also note: I'm only showing the
auction that actually sold and not the two previous listings using his other
account. In fact, he didn't even wait a month after beating the regulars to
relist the card. Also note that he did this to several big ticket cards with
Cal Ripken collectors also getting the "flip") Again, not illegal
- I want to make that clear.
And
finally you can see the new "winning bidder" has now relisted the
card (his "flip" less than a week later!) with a MINIMUM Bid of $550.
(see highlighted area) And what is his is asking BIN price? $999.99 - of course.
If
you truly want the card - I say go for it.
But if you want to prevent being abused this way - don't play their game.
Let them sit on their 'mojo' for a couple of years. Let 'em wait so long that
they're forced to finally let true collectors bid a fair market price.
