1998 Donuss Elite Back To The Future 'XXXX' Sample - with Travis Lee
This is one of the "XXXX" Samples prepared for the staff at Pinnacle Brands. And as you can see - a stark difference from the final approved and issued version which depicts Boston slugger David Ortiz on the card backs.

Also an excellent example of how these 'XXXX' cards were produced. Even before the official promos were made for the dealers - these samples were created to give various Pinnacle departments input on changes/revisions before the final artwork went to press. Clearly, for some unknown reason, it was decided that Travis Lee was not going to be used. Not that that avoided any problems...

According to a rumor I heard at the time - Ortiz was very upset to see that he was not depicted on the front of the card - so much so that he refused to autograph his allotment of the BTTF inserts. Again, a rumor. I have no idea why Ortiz didn't sign his half of the cards. But everyone knows for a fact that Big Frank suggested signing a special Elite card in place of the BTTF dual auto.

More about this issue, including the actual production card & autographed cards, can be read here.
