2005 Donruss Diamond King
Original Painting

Does Frank's teeth look crooked to you? Right, not to me either. But that's what the artist saw.

And in case some wisenheimer says, 'Oh, the artist must have used an old picture'. Wrong. I have a clear images of The Big Hurt that go back to his days at Auburn University. He's had them whitened, yes, but they were always straight. This is pure incompetence on the part of the artist.

I was mildly disappointed when I received this painting. The illustrator who did Frank's portrait clearly made a mistake on Frank's teeth. They're not crooked, but he chose to illustrate them that way. I suspect he either had an extremely poor picture or was in a hurry (I know a lot of illustrators - it's most likely the latter). But whatever the case, I'm sorely tempted to "correct" the image since I have the skill to do so. But I was trained in the old school - and touching another artist's work is tantamount to an artistic crime. But a small, very vocal, part of me says the true "crime" is that Frank's image will be forever scarred because of this artist's inability to manage his time.

Still, it is the original painting used for all the 2005 Donruss Diamond King cards - and for that - I'm pleased to own it.
