Topps
bought out the Bowman Card Company in the late 1950's, and in 1990,
feeling the pressure from Fleer, Score, and newcomers Upper Deck, they
reintroduced the brand name to re-capture a larger market share.

CMC/ProCards

A very confusing issue with a tangled history. Not rare, but wacky. First off, note that the "" noted is not a typo. If you look at this version this is the actual number seen. CMC (Collector's Marketing Corporation) was a company that specialized in producing minor league cards - one of their competitors was ProCards. However, that competition did not mean they wouldn't try to profit off one another - as they did in this case. CMC purchased a bulk load of ProCards inventory and had them reprinted with: New numbers, the addition of the MLB logo, a glossier finish, but no corporate sponsorship logo. CMC then inserted these cards into their own product line. This version of the CMC/ProCards could be found in a prepriced complete wood box set and primarily differs from the original inventory ProCards (card #1116) by way of a different pose/image of Frank. Follow me so far? Okay, read on... CMC was
later purchased by Impel, who in turn was later sold to Skybox, who
in turn was sold to Fleer, which was then sold to Marvel, who after
nearly going bankrupt, sold Fleer & Skybox to the Grasso family
(former owners of the Rite-Aid line of drug stores) who then nearly
went bankrupt themselves in scandal, who then sold all the assets
to Upper Deck. Boy, I miss the 90's. So much fun. |

Note
there are two very similar looking cards from this company. This version
can be found with the Gatorade corporate sponsorship logo found on card
backs. The other (later) version was produced by CMC (Collector's Marketing
Corporation) and did not have the sponsorship logo.

Although
Frank already had 1-1/2 seasons in the White Sox minor league system,
Topps was strangely unable to obtain a picture of him as a professional.
This RC shows him in his college uniform - The Tigers of Auburn University,
Georgia.

Known
throughout the hobby as the 'NNOF' or No-Name-On-Front error.
It's rarity has produced at least several counterfeits, so caution is advised before purchasing "raw" or unslabbed examples. I would recommend purchasing only those cards graded & authenticated by PSA, *In 2005 Sports Collector's Digest sold their interest in the grading company they created and the new owners (who have kept the SCD initials) have been caught certifying trimmed and fake cards. |

UPDATED
12.18.07: I didn't even think to add this to the checklist since
I thought sellers parlaying this particular scam had stopped doing
it years ago. Unfortunately it would seem I was wrong. I'm once again
seeing another jerk cutting apart this poster and selling them as
'special promos'. He uses titles like: "1990 Bowman Checklist
Poster Card". Remember this poster can easily be found
in copies of a 1990 Topps Magazine (Summer/Issue 3 with Bo Jackson
on the cover).
